1. The Light Gap Rule: The Secret to Visually Enlarging Small Living Rooms
The basis for an open sense of space is the so-called Light Gap Rule. If a massive box-shaped piece of furniture stands directly on the parquet, it blocks the line of sight and abruptly stops the flow of the floor. However, if the furniture piece is hung on the wall and the resulting free space is illuminated with an invisible LED strip, an optical gap is created. This soft carpet of light on the floor suggests to the eye that the space continues under the furniture piece. The volume of the cabinet seemingly dissolves.
Soft diffused light gently traces over the fine pores of the oak parquet, relieving the room of its evening heaviness. To maximize this effect, interior designers in 2026 rely on a minimum distance of 15 to 20 centimeters between the floor and the bottom edge of the furniture. Only then does the light have sufficient space to softly fade out, as we explain in detail in our article Why Floating Furniture Delights Minimalists.
Livarea Expert Tip:Never stick the LED strip directly to the front visible edge. Place it about five to eight centimeters inwards, offset at a 45-degree angle to the wall, to avoid harsh light reflections on the floor.
