1. Wood lives: Why proper care is indispensable

Unlike veneered or lacquered surfaces that completely seal the material under a rigid layer, real solid wood has open pores. Through this structure, the material continuously breathes and reacts to its environment by absorbing moisture from the room air and releasing it when dry. This natural exchange ensures a healthy indoor climate, but also makes the material unprotected and susceptible to penetrating liquids or dirt particles. A high-quality care oil penetrates deep into these wood fibers and crystallizes there. This creates an internal protective barrier that makes the wood water-repellent without blocking its valuable breathability.
This physical process, which experts refer to as polymerization, gives the tabletop its immense suitability for everyday use. When you regularly oil your table, the wood not only remains supple but also intensifies its characteristic grain – an effect known in interior design as enhancing the grain. As we already show in our article about the style break on the terrace, wood gains incomparable vibrancy through weathering and care. Indoors, the oil specifically protects against drying out, which is particularly crucial during the heating season to prevent fine stress cracks in solid oak or walnut wood.
Livarea Expert Tip:Always use a special countertop oil or a solvent-free hard wax oil for dining tables. These are food-safe and, due to the added wax content, offer an even smoother, more robust surface than pure linseed oil.
