How is Marble Formed?
Through a long transformation of various minerals deep within the Earth, marble is formed under intense pressure and great heat. The main components of marble are limestone, dolomites, and other calcium carbonate rocks. Therefore, its composition is highly dependent on the respective quarrying area. As early as the seventh century BC, marble was coveted and quarried through laborious manual work.

Where is Marble Found?
Marble can be found in many regions of the world (Italy, France, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Iran, India, and China). Each region exhibits a different quality of the material in terms of colour, structure, and hardness. In Germany, a distinction is made between polishable limestone (Jura marble) and true marble. It must therefore consist of at least 50 % calcite, dolomite, or aragonite.

Due to its varying composition, each variety has special properties. Marble can be found in almost every hue, shade, and colour combination. Its crystalline nature gives it its characteristic lustre. The largest marble deposits are presumably located in the region of Tuscany in Italy. This type of marble is known as Carrara Marble; it stands for the highest quality and is available in over 50 varieties due to its diversity. Thanks to the natural veining in marble, each piece is a beautiful unique item.

Where is marble used?
The surface of the stone is very smooth with low porosity. Therefore, it is very frost-resistant and ideal for garden furniture. In addition to these practical properties, marble is a noble natural product. Its individual appearance refines marble furniture such as coffee tables, dining tables, chests of drawers and sideboard surfaces. A chest of drawers with marble can give it a very special look. As a floor covering or kitchen worktop, polished marble can develop dull spots and scratches after some time. This is due to marble's low degree of hardness. For this reason, the entire surface of the natural stone must then be polished by an expert to restore its shine.

Unsealed marble is also sensitive to acid. Therefore, contact between marble and vinegar, wine, fruit acid, and some cleaning agents should be avoided. Depending on the type of marble, extraction technique, and degree of processing, it is an expensive material.

What is the difference between marble and granite?
Granite is an igneous rock, consisting primarily of silicates. Its structure is coarse-grained, and it is a very hard, compact material. This means granite is more difficult to cut, process, and polish than marble. Due to its degree of hardness, granite is much more resistant than marble and wears out less quickly. Granite retains its smooth surface for a very long time, is a robust floor covering under heavy use, and is hardly sensitive to acid. Only grease stains can settle between the individual grains in the granite. However, there are special products for marble and granite that serve as a protective film. Regarding hardness, marble is more commonly laid indoors, and granite more outdoors.
